Neither

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—This relatable tale of not fitting in begins in the Land of This and That where one is either a blue bunny or a yellow bird. When a green bird-bunny hybrid is hatched, it declares itself Both. In the Land of This and That one must be one or the other, being both is not acceptable. So Both is instead declared Neither and it is suggested in no uncertain terms that as "not one of us" it should find "Somewhere Else." Both flies away and alights in the The Land of All where myriad creatures in all colors, shapes, and sizes live and all are welcome. Both even welcomes some of his former Landmates who don't fit in the Land of This and That. Featuring lots of bright bold colors, plenty of word balloons, and a ton of fantastic critters (like a purple butterfly cat) Anderson's illustrations are a perfect match for the message of her text. Who knew a bird-bunny face could be so expressive? Cleverly, Anderson never specifies a name or gender, so her bird-bunny is a perfect avatar for all. VERDICT This less-than-subtle tale of belonging hits all right notes and is filled with fun, fantastical creatures to boot. The last line of the book sums it all up—"Once upon a time there were many kinds…and all were welcome!"—Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

My (6yo) son loves this book and has read it every day since it arrived (aloud to us or to himself) and even started drawing his own spin-off book. This makes me very happy, while he is a voracious consumer of audiobooks, he is a reluctant reader at home. I ordered this and unpacked it but hadn’t had a chance to sit down and read it with him before he picked it up and read it himself and showed it excitedly to us.The paintings are lush and candy-colored, but not overwhelming, so the story progresses without confusion. The accompanying text is simple enough for him to read with the emotions clearly communicated, and the ultimate message of inclusion is out loud and proud and fun, a celebration page with great joy in the diversity of all the different creatures.

This book is FANTATIC. It could be about trans issues or not. It is about the land of This and That where everyone is born either This (blue bunny) or That (yellow duck). When one of them is born part bunny, part duck they are excited to be “both.” But the others say they must be This or That and that they are not “both” but “neither.” Neither?!! They are very sad about the reframing from both to neither and they, with encouragement from the other inhabitants of the Land of This and That who say they do not belong, decides to find somewhere else to fit it. They find the Land for All where everyone is different and that is why they play together. They are amazed by this new social premise: rather than play with folks because they are the same as you, play with them because they are different from you! The last page shows an exodus from the Land of This and That to the Land of All which my child loves.

"Neither" is amazing and adorable. I love how "Neither" applies to everyone who has ever felt that they don’t belong in a certain group (haven’t we all felt that way at least once in our lives) And it also applies to everyone else to remind us all to be more open and welcoming to anyone who is “different” or doesn’t seem to fit in.The illustrations are charming, fun and beautiful.

This book is simple and fun with brightly colored and cute illustrations. A good message for all children. Where this story really shines and brings something different is when two characters who look at first glance like they fit the typical blue bunny/yellow bird dichotomy come to the more inclusive society and are welcomed. The message being not only is an inclusive society better for those who absolutely can't fit in elsewhere, it's also better for people with subtle or invisible differences who would otherwise make themselves fit in to the binary.

My son fell in love with this book at first sight! He brought it in to school the very next day to share with his kindergarten classmates. He especially loves the page where all the animals together make a rainbow. What a wonderful message of inclusion and celebration of individual uniqueness!

The colors and illustrations in this book are so vibrant I can't take my eyes off of it! I can't wait to share this with my classroom. The message of inclusion and acceptance of the "different" is beautiful. We will always need more compassion and empathy in the world.

Love all of it, Airlie is a fantastic artist and the message is on point! We got this as a gift for a new baby in the family. Keep them coming Airlie.

We loved it.My kids love looking at all the fun creatures!!Heard the author on the One Bad Mother podcast. Great interview!!
