In September 2016, just prior to the election, Michael Anton (writing as Publius Decius Mus) published an essay entitled "The Flight 93 Election," the point being that we were in an existential moment and that if our country was to survive we would have to rush the Hillary Clinton cockpit and elect her rival. This did not charm many of his readers. Hence he wrote a followup: "Restatement on Flight 93." He was then criticized for not producing a positive alternative or positive vision. Now he has written a "pre-statement on flight 93," setting out the basis for his argument, the foundation for his position. All three are contained in this little volume, with the "pre-statement" introducing the discussion, followed by the two previously-published essays. The "pre-statement" is philosophic and begins, as we so often begin, with Aristotle. It is learned, persuasive and not unsurprising; conservatives have walked this path before. The core of his thought is best seen through a central metaphor. The republican establishment has become a political version of the Washington Generals. They generally lose, but they do gain a bit of attention and always draw checks. They are part of the establishment and battles between them and the democrats are essentially over the ability to manage the administrative state (the fourth element within our government), not to return to first principles. As Trump realized (and articulated), the world is now divided between elites and the denizens of the flyover states. The elites share a transnational globalism on whose riches they batten while the rest of us grow increasingly marginalized. We are bullied by unelected bureaucrats who indulge in endless process, punctuated by the imbibing of good chardonnay. The left has taken over and it has coopted the republican establishment, moving them ever farther to the left so that anything slightly to the right of democrat ideology is labeled racist Nazism. The core philosophic debate here concerns the left's claims of 'being scientific' in contrast to the right's philosophic assertions (which fail to register when one is asserting truth claims). This is all ridiculous, of course, since the left only endorses the science which supports their positions and freely asserts positions (dozens and dozens of gender states; damn the DNA evidence) which are undercut by science. At the same time, they overlook the obvious fact that science, at its heart, is falsifiable and continues to change and develop. Newton's titanic achievement was quickly adjusted by Laplace and Lagrange. In the next century science gave us phlogiston (but then, Lavoisier, and so on). Marx, of course, claimed a scientific basis for his work, but then recalcitrant reality intruded and demonstrated the results, on the ground, of his thought. Hence, reality (logic, fact, objective truth) was challenged by the darlings of the left, the French Nietzscheans, whose thought dominated the left-leaning academy for a generation.Forgive the aside. The bottom line is that MA's book is endlessly suggestive in its outline and I could not restrain myself from reflecting on it for a moment. For pure political power the "Restatement on Flight 93" is the most powerful section of the book. It points up the remarkable nature of his insights and Trump's political instincts. The thrust of their arguments is perfectly clear (and in my humble opinion, perfectly cogent); the reason that they are subjected to so much anger and vitriol is because they are right: the entrenched elites truly are united in their beliefs, their self-interest and in their ways of proceeding. Trump and Anton are anathema to them because their positions are built upon ideology alone but ideology that is constantly and loudly reinforced by the institutions which they now control. Trump now poses the existential threat to them and they are not amused.

On the one hand, the author is a skillful, serious writer, a thoughtful philosopher, and clearly a learned individual. His concerns regarding the country's future given the relentless shift to the left over the past decades are communicated with passion and credibility. But a lot of time and energy is devoted to defending and/or explaining his initial essay of the three that are featured in this volume, and that discussion doesn't lend itself to a "book" format, but feels more appropriate to a periodical. As a result, the most recent essay, penned in 2018, has more to do with the author, himself, as opposed to evaluating what President Trump has or has not accomplished in the eighteen months since the author predicted a "Flight 93" election. Would have appreciated more scrutiny on how conservatism has fared since the inauguration.

The author keeps it short. It's really just three magazine articles . But Anton 's take is philosophical and analytic equivalent of Salena Zito's description of Trump voters.Anton doesn't give any quarter to establishment conservatives, never Trumpers or the left. That's what's great about it. Read it and don't be put off by the hard core philosophy at the beginning. It's worth getting to the rest.

I applaud Mr. Anton for authoring the Flight 93 article knowing the vitriol which would be directed toward him and the social and professional shunning which would follow. His work lays out a compelling case of how conservatives have failed and are spineless when forced to defend positions. He explains the Trump agenda can help restore America.

Reading these essays when they came out was a galvanizing experience. Essential reading for patriots whose first task is arresting the descent into statist tyranny; only after can we attempt to restore some semblance of constitutional order.

Using Flight 93 - the hijacked plane that crashed in Penn. on 9/11 - as a comparison to the election of Trump is so crass & disrespectful (and how sleazy do you have to be to put it in the title?). Hard to believe somebody would lower themselves to publish this after the original essay; guess money outweighs dignity and respect.

Must read for anyone that cares about America’s future.

When I first read the “Flight 93” essay it was a breath of fresh air and started me down the path of conservatism. I try to read everything Anton writes, usually in the Claremont Review if Books, and I was excited to see he has released a follow up to the original essay. This book is worth every penny. Thank you Michael please keep up the good work. The negative reviews are from trolls pay no mind.
