I've been wanting to read about Jake ever since he turned up in a snippet Cherise wrote as a blog post where he did a role-play with the blog's reporter as Santa. He just seemed to have a real fun side to him, and this is again evident in his and Rainie's story Show Me Baby. Some of her stories have a harder edge (especially ones about sadists!) but this one was lighter. Rainie did have some significant hangups and we found that Jake did, also. Part of it was due to well-intentioned but poor guidance from their respective mentors. In Rainie's case, she suffered a string of losses and hurts that made it very hard for her to trust her emotions to anyone. She is open and loving and supportive of others but can't seem to accept that she is worth the same care from them in return. When Jake finally has his eyes opened to the problem, he forces her to face her demons. It is a love story with a Dom who is more than just a rich handsome guy, and a BBW who loves easily despite having been hurt badly. Along the way to their HEA are some rip-snorting BDSM scenes as only Cherise can write them, some really funny moments at a batchelor and batchelorette night and a double wedding, and a couple of really satisfying smackdowns.I had worries about it being a novella, because Cherise's Masters of the Shadowlands books have tended to be fairly long, but it is a fully developed story and a satisfying read. All of our favorite characters from the Shadowlands appear at least briefly. This story can hold its head up with other books in the series, given that it is a novella.Thanks Cherise, for another great couple!
For those of us who are Cherise Sinclair groupies, which I definitely am, the Shadowlands is our happy place. It’s a place where men and women learn about living a life filled with passion and love. The members of Shadowlands are a family and the reader is the lucky voyeur. So when I heard that Ms. Sinclair was going to contribute a Shadowlands novella to the inspired 1001 Dark Nights collection, you know I was pre-ordering that book. I stalked my e-reader until the book magically appeared and then God help the person who interrupted my reading.As soon as I began reading, I was reminded of why I love this series. I fell in love with the heroine as soon as Rainie stepped out into the rain to save a stray dog. While I have loved all the women in this series, I must confess that Rainie is probably my favorite because I can relate to her the most. Her doubts about her worth hit too close to home. Add in her plus size and the resulting feelings of inadequacy, and well, let’s just say I get it. Yet, Rainie still worked hard to overcome her past and you couldn’t help but admire and cheer for her.Jake is everything I have come to expect from a Shadowlands’ master – commanding, alpha, smart, sexy, yet still caring and loving. But Jake has his own demons to overcome, most notably that even the strongest Dom can lean on his submissive and yet still be a Dom.The relationship between Jake and Rainie was so believable that I forgot these were fictional characters. I found myself shedding more than a few tears as Jake used his role as her Dom, to help Rainie learn to love herself. The harder Jake worked to help Rainie, the more I admired him. His protective and loving nature only made me fall further in love with him.In addition to these overwhelming emotional scenes, it wouldn’t be a Shadowlands story if there weren’t hot, wild and passionate BDSM scenes. Ms. Sinclair is a genius when it comes to writing sex scenes that leave the reader hot and bothered. She has an amazing ability to describe the D/s relationship in such a manner as to help you understand why someone would want to live this lifestyle.The reader was also gifted with the return of the characters that make the Shadowlands the phenomenal series it is. It is always wonderful to revisit with these men and women who have wormed their way into my heart. I love seeing how their relationships have grown and seeing where they are today.The writing in Show Me, Baby is everything I have come to expect from Ms. Sinclair. There is drama and emotions to keep you on the edge of your seat, but with enough humor to prevent you from being overwhelmed. It takes a special kind of author to write a book that will make you cry one page and laugh out loud on another. The dialogue is so natural that I can actually hear the characters speaking. You will find yourself so lost in the story that time will just slip away.With each addition to the Shadowlands, I swear that the newest is my favorite and so I will claim Show Me, Baby is my new favorite. Ms. Sinclair is a master technician at writing stories with so much heart and soul that once you begin reading, you won’t be able to stop until the final page. Now that this book is finished I begin the requisite guessing game of who will be featured in the next installment. Hopefully, Ms. Sinclair will never run out of characters to write about.
Excellent read, though anything by Cherise Sinclair usually is. I can't ever get enough of this author and the only thing wrong with this Title is that is was a novella and not a full length novel. The Masters of the Shadowlands is a terrific series that shouldn't be missed by anyone interested in this genre of books. Ms. Sinclair is an excellent author and her books have never disappointed. Highly recommend.
As this series has progressed now to the 9th book the emotional depth of each one also has increased. These aren’t just about Master’s and Subs, they are about the people behind those roles – their jobs, their friends, their at times heartbreaking pasts that have messed with their heads and self images of themselves.Jake and Rainie story also had the bonus of Gabi and Marcus and Sally, Galen and Vance's bachelor/bachelorette parties and their combined weddings. Most of the previous characters also make appearances with Master Z still being his meddling self : ) . Always great to be back with the gang from Shadowlands and Cherise never disappoints in her stories.
This book is likely my favorite in the series. Probably because I identify so much with Rainie. Growing up poor, self worth/esteem issues. Self sacrificing, wanting to help everyone, being a bit of a dork, being a plus sized woman, in all these things I saw myself. Cherise hit it out of the park when she created Master Jake. Sure, like most of the Doms he's a ripped hottie with a heart of gold deep inside, but he's so much more than the sum of his parts. Their dynamic together was believable, their relationship issues felt real and were well written and well explored. A well crafted story start to finish, bringing in all our favorites from previous stories, a real gift. And maybe a few breadcrumbs to follow for the future. If you're reading one BDSM book this summer, this might be the one to choose.
