Review
“Fascinating, even sensational reading.†- New York Times“Isadora was a wild voluptuary, a true revolutionary. She flouted every tradition. . . . She alone and unhelped changed the direction of her entire art.†- Agnes de Mille“For dance aficionados, Isadora Duncan's memoir My Life, with an introduction by Joan Acocella, completes the portrait of one of the twentieth century's most unforgettably Dionysian figures by restoring the bits originally deemed too spicy for print.†- Megan O’Grady, Vogue.com“It is a splendid book, an inspiring book, doors and windows and eyes and arms wide open to the world.†- Laura Jacobs, London Review of Books“One of the great documents of early-20th-century bohemianism and radicalism… A welcome new edition of a classic.†- Kirkus Reviews

Being a dancer and into writing a lot...this is one of my all time favorites as i find her, in my opinion, to have been one of the very best at both. I will quote some others comments that express better than i can: "With intense sincerity, amazing artistic instinct, ..a great intellect, an unparalleled genius, Isadora Duncan, one of the most dominant figures in the artistic life of our time, gives us the frankest, most outspoken autobiography ever written by a woman--perhaps the most intimate of all literature."(no name with this quote in the hard copy by Liveright Publishing, 1955) "An enormously interesting and profoundly moving book. Here is the record of a grand person." New York magazine."What a book, what a life story!" Harry HansenI highly recommend this book and warn to communicate first with your supplier to find out what you are actually going to get as i didn't get the publisher and book i ordered. And some reproductions or reprinting/publishing of the original autobiography have pictures (drawings) and commentaries that misrepresents this woman's real artistic talent, philosophy , and her actual dance pieces and classes. I prefer the original blue covered paperback which has only her own writing and pictures from those who knew her. I do not like the restored edition with an introduction by Joan Acocella, so if you get that one i would recommend you skip reading the intro until done with the autobiography and then go back and read it and see if you agree with Joan or not (i find her descriptions and explanations of Isadora rather slanted and take away from, rather than add to your introduction to Isadora and will filter your own response to her.)Another (hard back ) copy published many years later has added drawings (mostly nude..which she was NOT in the habit of modeling or dancing as, so seem quite out of place and do not look much like her) and which I think are not at all representative of who she was (though she was for sure daring and not at all prudish in her dress) However drawings in earlier books , about her, done by the folks of her own time that knew her well, do some fantastic replications of how she moved, what she wore and are quite appropriate and do add another dimension that does represent her and her artistic expression very well. I hope i have expressed my views clearly enough to be of some use to others. I love her visionary perspectives, amazing open mindedness and mind blowing honesty; how she presented her views to the world in both art and dance and what she did to change the whole world's understanding and view of both of those and life itself.
Great reading and especially for writer's, dancers, creative artists, and anyone who can appreciate an original thinker. She is so original and so deep in her views and understanding of so much of life and personal expression that she is more than what she is commonly credited or recognized as (an innovative dancer that completely changed the future of dance in her time) She is an artist and brilliant woman in many ways including being way ahead of her times in her artistic expression and appreciation of art but also very much in regards to so many issues, political, spiritual, and human rights/relations/interactions, and more. this is a thoroughly enriching book to read even for those who may not have considered it so.
Tragically Isadora Duncan was killed in a freak accident before her memoir was published. But fortunately the first draft was completed. And now with the content restored that was censored when the autobiography was published we get an in-depth understanding of who this pioneer of ancient and modern dance really was!!!
Self reflection...what a GREAT READ. The lady is a literary musician. Her words soothe your mind with wonderful images of life!
How did this amazing pioneer of liberated female spirit get so forgotten? Her prose inspires. With internet images there are hundreds of photos to verify her story. Isadora Duncan's accomplishments in her brief lifetime live on through the students she taught. I was amazed to find all the Duncan dance schools there are around the world with direct links to the dancers she adopted as children. There are many more books but the biggest thrill comes from her own words.
Isadora Duncan is easily one THE iconic figure sof the 20th century. This revised and updated edition of her work, which doesn't pull many punches, is always refreshing in its raw honesty. And if you love dance, too? Touchdown!!!!
Good
