Very basic step-by-step drawing of pets. Dover puts out very good products and I have loved almost everything I have ever had from Dover. These drawings are challenging enough to be fun but not so hard as to be impossible.
I got 3 of these books for my 6yr old grdgirl, animals people and how to draw,she spends hrs copying the pages and is so proud when she finishes an image

For a youngster, there appears to be a huge transformation between basic outline and the stage where the animal(insect) has features. It's not, really, but until that clicks in their heads, kids think it's missing steps. Also, it would be better if the basic shapes made use of varying line weights to show kids how to draw loose and to make sure they don't draw too heavily over lines that will be erased in later steps. The dashed-line portions are to be erased, but share equal line thickness with the portions that will be kept. Additionally, the dashes are so large that it's not always very obvious. I would suggest an improvement by shortening the length of the dashes. This review goes for another title by the same author "how to draw forest animals."

My 10 year old daughter loves ti draw. I have been buying these books to draw this and that. So this time I decided to look and saw that they now had a book to help draw action figures. I was like great. I gave this to my daughter early to see what her reaction was. She was ecstatic. She has been practicing her drawing and added some of these drawings into her homemade comic book. The ones we bought her last year helped her with drawing different animals and other subjects. I think these are great for a child you loves to draw. I try and get some gifts each year that helps in an area of creativity or academic. One year more geared toward art supplies, one toward magic, one toward science-telescope/labs/microscope, one toward music/keyboard, one toward drawing....Books like this are great and our daughter has taken it to school. I got a call from some parents asking me about the books.

I am so happy with the purchase and so is my eight year old son. I remembered having "How to Draw" books when I was a kid and I really enjoyed them so I thought I would buy some for my son. First we check the library (needle in a haystack and long wait list) and we went to Books A Million to try and pick some up right away. Ugh. What I didn't like about that experience was that first of all, the majority of the books were very girl focused (princesses, fairies, ponies, dolls) and though I support my son wanting to use any of those books- he simply didn't. Secondly, the books we did find we either very simple not realistic type picture instructions or on the other end of the scale that it was pre-teen/adult stuff. Lastly, the price was pretty steep per book. We left with one book and very disappointed. So I decide to come online and see what I could find since he did have the one book to tie him over. I did a lot of searching and the Barbara Soloff collection seemed right on the money for what I was after. The books came the other day (one a rainy day no less :-) !!) and my son spent over an hour drawing until his little hand was cramped. They are high quality and afordable with the perfect level with room to grow. So very happy. The selection of books is so wide it was hard to only buy 3! My son has already started combining pictures from each book. My fridge has never looked more beautiful and inspiring :-) .
I love this book. I like to color alongside my toddler and this book is a great way to introduce drawing to her. Since the drawings start out with basic shapes that combine into an animals, I also use it to reinforce concepts of shapes and size. "I'm going to draw a big circle and some small circles, and now I have a fish!"The drawings while simplistic are charming and very recognizable. Great for children or people interested in doodling. It is a cheap paperback book that my daughter has confused for a coloring book but since it's came for a great price, it doesn't matter. Love it!
