James Endredy leads workshops throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada and is actively involved in preserving the world’s indigenous cultures and sacred sites. For more than 25 years he has learned shamanic practices from all over the globe and has lived with the Huichol of Mexico for years at a time. Haven't finished it, but it is well written and tells about the real word of shamanism as opposed to Casteneda's new age fantasy type stuff. Much detail of Huichol culture and a very personal story. Really fascinating, I look forward to contiuing...
For those walking a shamanic path, this is a valuable addition to your library. Reads like an ethnographic novel, but is real. Also a rather quick read. You can do it in a day.
Endredy is one of the few Westerners writing on Shamanism today who is worth reading. Unlike Western neo shamans, James has entered deeply into these indigenous communities and is accepted as a Native. In other words, he is the real deal.This book (like his many others) penetrates deeply the Wisdom and praxis shamanic culture to enlighten and educate!The book is well written and provides insight into the Huichol Cosmovision, ceremony, and shamanic practices of the Huichol Indians of the Sierra Madre region of Mexico. It is a profound book. Any one interested in shamanic themes can, and will, benefit by reading this book. It provides psychological tools to improve your life -- assuming you apply them! Specifically, the Five Points of Awareness.In addition, this book provides and interesting discussion on Gnostic themes and the many worlds we can -- and must -- walk to find Wisdom.As a Seminary Graduate, the discussion of Gnosticism aptly characterizes differences that every spiritual seeker ought to be familiar with in the modern world. Since it describes succinctly how the battle lines are drawn in our contemporary moment, and what some refer to the Cultural Wars plays out in the public square.Aptly, the value of sacredness of Native Peoples in various bioregions who use the Plant Spirit Medicine for healing, knowledge, and cultural recovery juxtaposed years of abuse, inculturalization by dominate European Peoples, have reeked havoc on these indigenous cultures.
