I purchased this book because I recently took a film class in college, and became interested in films from the silent era through the1940's. I had never heard of this filming location but decided to order the book. I am so glad that I did! The Alabama Hills has been used for filming from the silent era through now. The photographs were absolutely stunning, and have really led me to become even more interested in some of the early film actors that I had not previously discovered. The book also provides some fascinating information about the locations, movies, and background information on the productions. I really enjoyed the personal photographs and experiences from the author. Well worth the read!
Even if you have nothing more than a minor affection for the Alabama Hills and western movies, you need to add this book to your library. A fun read and some outstanding photos not see in other publications.

This book is supposedly about the area known as the Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine in California-a famous site that I have seen and continue to see in many films. I am a bit disappointed in this book because first off, there is no map of the hills indicating this or that site, the trails, etc. This would be greatly appreciated. Second, there is a great deal of what I would call "peripheral information" about Hollywood personalities and stars, which, even though interesting to a historic film buff such as myself, is not particularly relevant to knowing more about the actual physical site of the hills. I still wanted to know more about the place after finishing this book. I plan to visit there as it is one of the very few locales used in films in the 20th century that is still exactly the same as seen in movies made there starting in the 1920s. The book is curiously written and lacks lists of films done there, chronology of films with locations, more historical background on the owners and the area, present day conditions and access.The good points are that the paper is good quality and the photos are well reproduced, but the subject matter with so many photos would be better served in a larger format instead of the 6.25 x 9.25 in seen here. But for $11.81 it is not per se overpriced.
