All in all, this trilogy is a pretty collection of must read books. However, I regret reading it in a stride.I heard about 'My family and other animals' a few times before, but finaly took it to read upon an acquaintance' recommendation. I took a trilogy because it paid off (t was a good one book price for three) and I like having books of a collection neatly sticking together. It is also a good edition - I haven't got a complaint about it.About the content. As said, 'My family and other animals' is a must-read. The author poured his soul on the pages, his enthusiasm is tangible and contagious. There's also a faint child-like feel to the first book, to the stories about first encounters with earthly creatures and the family's reactions to young Gerald's growing "managerie".The stories are hillarious, made me want to learn more about some of the animals (I knew only a few of them, like dogs and a donkey, but I had to search the web for geckos, spiders and various beetles). The three books in the Corfu Trilogy were not written consequently, and it shows. While the language improved visibly, the style changed as well. Not necessarily in a bad sense (some of the best, the most funny stories are in the third book), but it's visible. The style difference is what prevented me from giving the Trilogy five stars. What bothered me personally was reading the same chronology three times repeated. The stories are different each time, but to me it was a little boring knowing Gerry was through growing up once or twice already. So, I recommend reading the Trilogy in three chunks, with at least a few months in-between. Start with 'My family and other animals'.

This is the first time I have read Gerald Durell, and it was a magnificent read! Because of his unusual upbringing, he uses words that are highly descriptive and makes you 'see' the things he describes. I was totally lost in the richness of his writing, and highly recommend that you just read the trilogy in as much of one sitting as you can because it is like having a lavish meal from entree to dessert all in one....

While nominally a biography of Gerald Durrell's adolescent years on the island of Corfu, in the years just preceding WWII, the books are a somewhat fictional and very humorous account of his observation and interaction with the ecosystem of Corfu, as well as his eccentric family, his teachers, and the local population of Corfu, before the scourge of tourism. I read a book last year where the author went in to excruciating detail about the settings for every scene. One might accuse Durrell of the same, but while the other author's descriptions just felt tedious, from Durrell it's just pure poetry. I once said that what made Isabella Bird so amazing is that while the rest of the world was writing in black and white, she was writing in technicolor. Durrell does much the same for all the living creatures and their habitaton Corfu. Reading about his observations and interaction with all the various flora and fauna is half the fun of this book. I will say that the first of the three books feels the most inspired, but they are all great fun. As you can tell, this gets a huge thumbs up from me.

You will fall in love with the adventure-driven, sun-seeking, shenanigans-planning Durrell Family as they leave their cold, dreary English home and follow their hearts to the Greek isle of Corfu. Every member of the family marches to his or her own drummer, yet manages to support and sustain every other family member. The quirky personalities of the lovable local people who embrace the Durrells on their quest for a life well-lived, are every bit as entertaining as the family. The descriptions of the beauty, the scenery, the animals, and the sea, are as delicious as the foods we sample in the story. You will add the sleepy island of Corfu to your list of places to visit, in hopes of finding a bit of the treasure found there by the Durrells.

It is my habit to read in bed every night, and I often fall asleep with book in hand. But I cannot put this book down, and can't wait to go to bed so I can see what the Durrells are up to next!! OK, I must admit to watching the PBS production of The Durrells of Corfu, too! But that cast is exactly what I imagine the real family and their acquaintances look and act like! Gerald writes with such beautiful, insightful descriptions of the Natural world of bees, bugs, sea creatures, and the wacky humans that inhabit his world! Makes you want to visit Corfu, and bring your magnifying glass, too!

Loved this book! Loved Mr. Durrell's beautiful descriptions; the ocean, the land, the olive trees. Enjoyed the characters as well--and some were quite that. And, I loved Gerry, the youngest in the family through whose eyes the story was told. That said, this book is also populated with untold stories about animals--pets, yes but also birds, snakes, toads, hedgehogs, etc. that young Gerry, a naturalist in the making, captures and cares for. Some might find these portions of the book uninteresting, but having been a Gerry in my youth, I simply found it charming. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves nature, beautiful descriptions, odd-ball characters and has the time to leisurely wend their way through The Corfu Trilogy.

After watching the "Durrells in Corfu" on PBS I decided I'd like to read the trilogy written by the son Gerald Durrell. I downloaded it to my Kindle although I was rather taken aback that the cheapest I could find it was 25.99. Well I said, it is a trilogy and perhaps worth it. I enjoyed the book very much, so much that my son decided to also download to his Kindle. I couldn't believe it, but he got it for 3.99. What gives with this price disparity?
