I gave this book three stars because it is short and to the point. There's no ambiguity here. In fact, I wish that every one of the 150,000,000 Christians addressed in this book would actually read it and discuss it in church. Christians need to spend less time singing the same songs over and over and listening to three-point self-help sermons and more time understanding the rising tide of anti-Christianity that seems to be going mainstream in our culture. Most Christians I know are oblivious to this trend or simply don't care. Now for some points I'd like address (and not all of them, but space is limited here):Page 7. The Bible is not the most "profound book ever written". It is a collection of writings spanning thousands of years, and it actually took some time for the early church to decide which writings were included and which were to be left out. It's not so simple as a "book" that was "written". And, to me it is not so much the "word of God" as a collection of writings, written by inspired people, that contain the word of God.Page 8, and other pages. Harris writes this to a "Christian" nation, I would expect him to know that the New Testament, not Torah (the law sections of the Old Testament), is the center of doctrine and ethics for Christians. Cherry picking those really yucky sounding passages from the Old Testament and attacking Christians with them is as cliche at it is inaccurate.Page 10. Jesus did seem to endorse the entire Old Testament law in Matthew 15:18-19, but Gentile Christians (like me and most of those 150,000,000) were explicitely exempted from following Torah at the Council of Jerusalem as recorded in Acts 15:29. All we Gentile Christians are admonished to do, with respect to the Law of Moses, is to not drink blood (no problem), not eat meat from strangled animals (no problem), and to avoid sexual immorality (a problem, but doable).Page 16 - 17. On slavery. In the survey of Christian teachings on slavery, Harris seems to have missed 1 Corinthians 7:21 where Paul writes to slaves "if you can gain your freedom, do so". See, I picked a cherry that he didn't.Page 19. I personally have never heard the Ten Commandments cited as proof that our nation was founded on Judeo Christian prinicples. That seems like backward logic to me, as the Ten Commandments per se are not law in the United States. However, Moses is depicted more than once in friezes in or on our Supreme Court building. I especially like the one at the very apex of the entrance with ol' Moses holding both of those tablets. That doesn't make the Ten Commandments binding law, but it does indicate that there might be something "Judeo Christian" about our national heritage.Page 25. The reason why Christians spend more "moral energy" fighting abortion than genocide might be because abortion is happening all around them in their own families and communities, and the genocides are, thankfully, far away where they are near impossible to fight without an assault by the US Marines.Page 26. Believe it or not, the reason why I intend to discourage my sons from having premarital sex is precisely because of the suffering an unwanted teen pregnancy brings to the kids and the parents (not to mention the baby). Some of the stuff you can do while you're naked can really mess up more than one life.Page 34. On condom use in Africa. Hey, not all Christians are Catholics. Christianity is not a monolith.Page 43. Yes, much of the "developed" world has nearly accomplished an end to religion. And, at least some of those countries mentioned are in Western Europe and are not breeding in sufficient numbers to keep their own atheist populations from dwindling to nothing in a few generations.Page 47. On the tsunami after Christmas 2004. None of my circle of Christians expressed the idea that this was God's wrath, but many of us sent money to the Red Cross.Page 70. So, now the fact that our high school students test below every European and Asian nation in science and math is the fault of Christians?!! Dear reader, if your kid is a dunce, it ain't my fault!Pages 70 to 71. The best evidence for evolution is the fact that the human genome contains many "switched off" sequences that are identical to sequences that are "switched on" in simpler species. I learned this from a book by Francis S. Collins, former head of the Human Genome Project, whose studies in genetics lead him to faith in Christ. In general, one of the hallmarks bigotry is selecting negative examples of a group (culture, race, or religion) and generalizing them across all members of that group. Using the Christians who saw the tsunami as God's wrath, or the missionaries who preached against condom use in Africa seems to me just that: taking the extremes of a few and generalizing to the many who are not like that. This letter reads like some sort of rational appeal to those Harris disagrees with to "see the light", but Harris reveals himself on page 88 where he proclaims that "the practice of raising our children to believe that they are Christian, Muslim, or Jewish be widely recognized as the ludicrous obscenity that it is."To Harris, religion (at least these three) is obscene, and on page 91 he calls on "our schools" (the ones my tax dollars fund, no doubt) to "announce the death of God", and for the media to "criticize the abject religions certainties of our public figures".So, get the schools and the media working together to eradicate religion. I'll wager that if he were that omnipotent little kid in that classic Twilight Zone episode he would wish us all into the cornfield. There really is a place where people of all religions, with all their contradictory holy books, live together without killing each other. It's the "Christian Nation" called The United States of America. Finally, Harris writes on page 91 that "this letter is a product of a failure". I think it's equally likely that its the product of the success of the book he wrote before this one, and of all the Christians who actually felt threatened by it and played into his hands and made him even more money. I hope he enjoys it while it lasts.

I read on Kindle, and highlight things I want to remember. Typical a book will have 9 or 10 highlights. I was 70 pages into this book before I hit a page that DIDN"T have something highlighted. I've read hundreds of thousands of books. Hands down, Letter to a Christian Nation is the best non-fiction I have ever read. I just wish I could download it to my head. Thanks to Sam, when people were stalking my Dog Park (Seriously? A Dog Park?) with signs saying "What the Bible Teaches Us" I was able to tell them "Not math. God may have been omnipotent, but he couldn't figure out how to measure a circle. (I hardly ever leave reviews, but this book NEEDS to be read. By everyone.)

I enjoyed reading this book but found it disorganized. I warn using this book as any more than something that provokes thought. Many believers will likely be immediately turned off by Harris’s tone, and it’s purpose seems more to gratify non-believers than to convert theists. Sections of the book are unnecessarily extra harsh on Muslims, and may be used (out of context) to promote violence against them. Regardless of who you are, should you get this book, read through a filter, recognize Harris’s biases, keep an open mind, and enjoy his moments of insight.

This is probably one of the most important short books, I have had the privilege to read. It should result in sincere discussions about the role, or current lack thereof, religion plays in today’s world.May-be future generations will look back at this time as a watershed moment, where humanity takes a step further towards enlightenment.

Well-written, well-documented, and completely intriguing. I bought the audio book, listened to it, then started again from the beginning. I was expecting a diatribe of the Facebook/Twitter type and was delighted with the intellectual approach to the subject of the erratic Christianizing of the country.
