I’ve been wanting to try this author for a while, and I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews and recommendations for this series in particular. I dug in with much excitement when the first book crossed my path.Tyler Mitchell feels like he’s missing part of himself. There are so many questions about his past, his family background. Raised only by his mother, he was alone in the world when she died when he was 16. Thankfully his best friend’s family took him in, but even nine years later he’s struggling with knowing who he is - the poor orphan or the adopted son of an affluent family. When he hears that his paternal grandfather, whom he never met, has died and left him his belongings, Tyler grasps at anything that might bridge this gulf he feels in his heart.Gray has crafted a very realistic novel about hurting people and traps that we can fall into when our most vulnerable selves are crying out. This book did not seem like the first in a series, as the web of relationships was quite thick from the very beginning. Tyler’s quest to connect with his past causes quite a bit of tension among his friends and adopted family, and he wonders why they seem to stand against him finding answers.I did take some issue with the fact that this is listed as inspirational fiction. There is only one character who I could tell was a Christian, and there was only one single conversation about God that came 75% of the way through the book. I felt the lack of faith content, and as a more conservative reader, I didn’t like the cursing, frequent drinking, or the way the characters who were supposedly best friends treated each other. There was a lot of tension, a lot of fighting, a lot of alternating anger and coldness. I was so turned off that I do not plan to read any more of this series, though I may check out some of Gray’s others in the future.I can see people enjoying this book who like gritty fiction with a dose of real world problems.
Until I Knew Myself and The Bentwood Series it starts is the kind that is worth investing your time in. This first book introduces a group of friends with the focus being on one couple in particular, Ty and Journey. Their story is an absolutely beautiful one of two broken people being made whole so they can finally come together in a far richer relationship than they had before. Each one of them have hurts that they have to face and lies that they have to overcome.Ty is so desperate for a sense of belonging that he can’t see that he already does belong. There are lies acting as a wall standing between him and the gifts God has for him. Lies that keep him from realizing how loved and wanted he really is, not only by an earthly family, but also by a heavenly Father. In the course of this book, the blinders finally lift and Ty can begin to see what gifts he’s been given and what love is already being poured out over him, helping him to really begin to see things as they really are.Lies we believe so often taint so many areas of our lives and the perceptions we have of situations we deal with. But God is good, so good to weave our stories together and bring us to places of truth and healing. God knows the hurts we have, the lies we’ve believed even when we ourselves don’t see it, and He works tirelessly to bring them out into the open, to bring His children to places of light and hope and truth and healing.God’s fingerprints are all over this story, bringing these people to where they are ready to hear the truth and can begin to heal, bringing good from bad—redeeming the bad and repurposing it for their good. This is a wonderfully written story of coming home, of finding out you belonged all along, of coming out of darkness and bondage to lies and into His marvelous light. I believe this novel has the ability to speak to so many people and remind them of who they are because of God and His love for them and maybe open doors for them to see that He’s been there all along and that even now He is working their story out for good. There’s so much to love about this book in addition to the beautiful picture it paints of an orphan who’s found his home. I love the tenderness of Ty’s and Journey’s relationship. I love seeing the changes in both both of them as they navigate the paths they are on. I loved watching Journey grow stronger and Ty find out he truly does belong. I also loved the love this group of friends has for each other, that even when they are struggling with life and with each other, there’s an underlying bond that holds them together and causes them to look out for each other. I am looking forward to the rest of the books in this series.
Until I Knew Myself is a beautifully written study of flawed "empty and lost" people, making the choices people in the world make when trying to satisfy what they believe is their "greatest need." It deals with how the lies we believe about ourselves (and others) blind us. And, how true love may not come in the package we thought it would.Like all of Tammy L. Gray's books there is romance full of tension, and deep internal conflict. Tammy has excellently set-up the secondary charactors' stories in the series. In particular I cannot wait to see how this all plays out. As an added bonus, there was a thread of suspense that had me tense throughout, but in a good way.The strength in Tammy's writing shines through. All of the characters are richly drawn, and fully fleshed out. There is a full emersion experience when reading. There are also little treats like a third point of view character who ads depth to the novel.I honestly don't want to say too much about the story lest I give anything away.Ultimately the message of Until I Knew Myself is that many of our heartaches and pains can be avoided if we are honest with ourselves and see ourselves and our circumstances as they truly are.
4.5A captivating story about a group of five rich people, friends from childhood. Ty is one of them. Originally he was born into a poor family but was adopted into Beck’s wealthy one. This story explores what happens when Ty discovers secrets about his biological family. This is a story of love and secrets, brotherhood and romance, secrets and insecurity. The characters of all five of the friends are clearly drawn here (and Caroline) but the focus of this one is on Ty and Journey. This is a clean romance read.
