I love anything Elminster but this book is one of my favorites. If you've read other Elminster books or many Forgotten Realms books, you get used to Elminster and his.....well, antics. Sometimes he can be funny and I enjoy that side of him. I've alwas thought he was a well-rounded character but if you are a fan of the Forgotten Realms, and especially an Elminster fan, you need to get this story. There is the classic El we all love but in this story you see much of the darker side. You see some of what El had to go through and a little about why.I won't go into anything that is a Spoiler so let me just finish by saying you will understand Elminster of Shadowdale a lot better after reading this story. This is an easy 5 star rating.
I remember when this book first came out. I would have bought it then just because it was written by Ed. It's as well written as any other story I have read of his, and beats many of the newer writers of today.
A very interesting and grand journey for Elminster and those who know of him. A story that is both exciting and adventurous, with a little humor sprinkled in. Everyone seems to be hunting Elminsters.
Great book.
I love any books with Elminster. He is, by far, my favorite literary character. Being able to read about his growth and development as he grows into becoming Faerun's most famous, or infamous, archmage is a treat.

It was an excellent book, and one of the better Forgotten Realms Novels that I have read. I would suggest it if you like fantasy books at all. The only things that I didn't like about were that the title is a bit misleading, as the only "temptation" of Elminster's that happens is somewhere near the end, and even that's debatable. Also, it seemed like Ed Greenwood couldn't find a thesauraus, for he kept using "motes of light" in the book. Repeatedly repetitive is how it seemed. Then again, maybe it's just me, since I prefer the books I read to have a variety of different words.
One of the best I've ever read. It is the perfect ending/beginning to a chapter/book and Character(s). I cannot wait for the next book.
